March was a big month behind the scenes. We spent most of it working on client projects and presenting at Golden Plains Shire Council, helping local business owners build a digital marketing roadmap that feels achievable. If your start to the year has felt busy or a bit reactive, you are not alone. Most small business owners I spoke with in March were juggling a lot.
The good news is that you do not need a full marketing overhaul to feel more organised. Small, simple shifts can make a real difference.
A pattern we saw in March was business owners trying to be everywhere at once. Multiple platforms, lots of posting and a sense that they were always behind.
Instead of asking what else you should be doing, try asking what actually works for your customers. Look at where enquiries are coming from, what people mention when they contact you and which channels feel sustainable for you to maintain. Focusing on the right things is more effective than trying to do everything.
You do not always need more posts. You often need clearer ones.
A simple way to do this is to write down the top three questions customers ask you. These questions are your content. They show you what people care about and what they need help understanding. When you answer real questions in plain language, your marketing becomes more useful and easier for people to connect with.
One of the most helpful tools I teach in workshops is the one sentence message. It helps you explain what you do in a way people can remember.
Try this structure:
I help [who] with [what] so they can [outcome].
You can still have detail on your website and in proposals, but this one sentence becomes your anchor. It keeps your messaging clear and consistent.
If you are not sure what to post, try using three buckets.
Rotate through these three and you will always have something meaningful to share. This approach keeps your content balanced without needing a complicated plan.
Marketing feels heavy when it sits on your list as one big task. Instead, choose one thing each week. Update one page on your website, write one helpful post, refine your one sentence message or ask one happy customer for a review.
Small, consistent actions build confidence. Confidence builds momentum.
Business owners are often juggling many roles. You do not need a perfect strategy to make progress. You need clarity, a few simple tools and a way of working that fits your capacity.
